Office Supplies Helpful Hints – How To Select The Right View Binders For Your Business
My specialty is writing about how to find the best office products for your business, and this article details the secrets to buying the right ring binder, or view binder for your needs. Searching for office supplies online saves you money and time, but it also can be difficult for the untrained office products buyer with so many choices. It’s really pretty easy if you follow a few simple guidelines and some helpful hints that take the mystery out of buying view binders.
Searching on a variety of office product sites for binders brings up almost 2000 products, so the first thing to do is trim down the item selection. There are really only three standard binder sizes: letter size which holds 8-1/2 x 11 paper, 14 inch legal size binders, and 8.5″ x 5.5″ personal size binders. The most popular size by far is the standard letter size binder. Next sort by the color, the most popular colors by far are black and white, and the number of products to sort through shrinks considerably.
After picking size and color, you need to determine the binder type. There are really only two types of binders prevalent in the marketplace. The less popular reference binder, which is simply a standard vinyl binder, and clear “view binders” which have a clear overlay covering the front and back of the binder so you can insert a cover sheet, and even customize the spine. After chosing your type, determine the ring size that is right for your project. Ring sizes vary from the really large 5 inch binders that hold up to 1200 sheets of paper, down to 1/2 inch binders that hold only 110 sheets. 2 inch binders are the most popular size both for schools and business, and 3 inch and 4 inch binders are also standard sizes that are available.
Probably the most difficult feature to determine is the type of ring for your binder. Binders used to be simple. Round rings were the standard value rings and used for every day needs, while D rings were more durable and held more paper, so they were perfect for business or heavy duty office needs. Today there are many different types to choose from, each with different features, prices and functionality.
I have the different types here in order of price to keep it simple starting from low priced to higher priced. They are: round ring, slant ring, d-ring, “Gapless”, EZ turn, and the premium style, EZD ring binders which are D-ring binders that open with the touch of a finger. I say keep it simple when it comes to chosing your ring type, and chose round ring for every day use when value matters, and D ring binders for more heavy duty higher volume needs or presentations. The other choices like Gapless and EZD just aren’t worth the added cost in my view.
After you sort the binders by size, color, type and ring, that huge list of 2000 binders you saw on your favorite online office product dealer’s website should be closer to 10-12 products, and far more manageable. From here it’s a just matter of selcting brand and price. I recommend the value of Universal brand binders because the quality is good, and the price is great – up tp 40% less than national brands. If brand is important, Avery is my first choice since they are the market leader, followed by Cardinal and Samsill which are both good brands too.
The question I’m asked all the time is where is the best place to buy view binders. First, stay away from the office supply superstores who no longer have the best prices, and have huge corporate structures that create bad customer service. I buy office supplies online at a small independent office products dealer, and look specifically for companies that have low prices and free shipping, and do good work in the community. There are new companies out there that practice a Conscious Capitalism business model, work with great charities, and donate half their profits to worthy causes. They save me money and we do good work together. Enjoy finding that perfect binder for you!
